eTwinning connects our English class with the outside world!

I would like to refer to the enormous benefits that ICT has to offer to the ESL classroom as well as to education in general.

Learning a language demands direct exposure to it and, thanks to ICT, we, as teachers, can provide our learners with a wide range of activities that enable them to practice all language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing as they would do in real-life situations.

Internet offers us the possibility to establish contact and start online collaborative projects with schools around Europe through, for example, the eTwinning portal, which is part of the European Union’s Erasmus + programme and includes useful tools, such as discussion forums, chat rooms, mailbox, etc. On the other hand, an ICT tool like the software program Skype enables us to arrange video-calls with native English speakers.

Isn’t this amazing? Our learners will not only be able to practice real English, but also learn about other cultures and get better in ICT literacy at the same time.

  1. As you said, the most important advantage of the ICT tools is the possibility to connecting people from each coutries around the world.
You can share with them your improveness at your daily classes and besides you can get the feedback from them.
I think the world is open nowadays. We should be openminders, that is the only way to avoid conflicts. If you show to the world your culture, the world will understand you and, on the contrary, if you close your windows to the world, probably the world never trust you.
Internet is a good way to became us like a brotherhood. All you need, you can take from there, also all you have, you can share to everybody.

  2. I am conscious of the importance of ICTs at class.
As teachers, we must Know how to produce language learning goals and prepare theme-based lessons according to these objectives.
We need to plan carefully the theme, the sub-themes, the materials, the activities and, of course, the learning objectives.
Themes can come from children´s interests, from topics, stories etc . This is a way of making students take an active part in the lesson development

  3. You right, for language acquisition is necessary to know the cultures from English speakers countries, is really important to introduce culture; ways to behavior, social standards, traditions… to realize how lives people in England or in America to understand and to interiorize a language. The possibility to interact with natives from different countries is fantastic and Internet gives us the opportunity. We can find many tools like Skype to chat, make a phone call or even a video-call as the examples you mentioned. The advantages are enormous and not stop increasing. We need to be on touch with technologies.

  4. Thanks for your comment, Maider. Yes, learning a foreign language is much easier when you have the chance to use it regularly to communicate with others.

  5. I enjoyed very much you blog! As most of you say implementation of ICT tools in the classroom should be carefully planned so as to take advantage of all the possibilities they offer to all of us. It’s undoubtedly how Web 2.0 tools can help to study and teach a second languge in a very motivating way. However, we should take special care about the organization and arrangement so as to build up an effective learning and teaching process.
